Job Description

This is a full-time, probationary, 10 month shared position between the Middle and High Schools.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operate in complete charge of the library at such times as the librarian shall not be present.
  2. Maintain responsibility for the following daily routines:
    1. Maintain order and a quiet, productive atmosphere;
    2. Oversee the check-out procedure and return of books and equipment
    3. Check the condition of all returned books and materials; make repairs to books needing mending and replace all torn book jackets;
    4. Reshelf books in their proper places; straighten shelves and keep area neat; maintain Dewey order;
    5. Aid students in the use of technology and media equipment;
    6. Aid students in finding books, proper materials and in answering reference questions;
    7. Check in new magazines, books, and equipment; catalog and process all periodicals;
    8. Fill teacher requests received for books or library materials;
    9. Print and distribute overdue notices
    10. Prepare date stamp and date due cards
    11. Maintain up to date attendance lists and bar codes for students in building;  keep library attendance;
    12. Update library displays;
  3. Update information in emergency folder.
  4. Prepare and update sign out binder and rolodex.
  5. Assist library teacher with classes and library events as needed.
  6. Process purchase orders and all new books, materials, DVDs, equipment, etc. acquired for the libraries.
  7. Complete all library clerical work (reports, bibliographies, purchase orders, etc.).
  8. Track all incoming and outgoing interlibrary loans as well as public library loans.
  9. Assist with ongoing inventory control including processing discard items, maintaining addition/deletion statistics and submit discard reports to BOCES.
  10. Assist in ordering supplies, materials and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability as needed.
  11. Along with the library teacher, complete a yearly inventory of all library materials and assist with development of end of year report.
  12. Carry out any other assigned duties and/or responsibilities which may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education.

Job Qualifications

General knowledge of clerical office skills. Helpful to have some knowledge of library procedures.  All Civil Service HELP requirements apply.
