Job Description

This is a 12 month, full-time position in the Transportation Department.

  • Coordinating with the Transportation Supervisor or Head Bus Driver, planning bus routes and assigning drivers on regularly assigned daily routes;
  • Assigns and reviews proper routes with substitute bus drivers;
  • Stays in communication with all bus drivers by means of two-way radio equipment;
  • Schedules drivers for all field trips and activity trips as required;
  • Maintains time and trip records for payroll purposes;
  • May advise responsible school district officials of road hazards which may necessitate school closings or delays in absence of Head Bus Driver;
  • Aids in resolving student disciplinary problems on school buses through contact with building principal;
  • Reports student accidents with Business Administrator and confers with unusual problems;
  • Informs maintenance staff of breakdowns and other mechanical problems;
  • Operates district routing and scheduling software;
  • Assists with reporting of required State Education Department information;
  • Meets regularly with drivers to discuss departmental issues in coordination with Head Bus Driver;
  • Assists in maintaining required documentation including accident reports, bus mileage, gas/diesel fuel use, 19A records, required DMV/DOT records;
  • Performs related clerical and general office duties;
  • May drive school bus when required.

This position is hiring in accordance to all Civil Service HELP requirements.

All Civil Service HELP requirements apply.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. CDL.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility for the appropriate driver’s license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of application or with possession of license at time of appointment.  Drivers must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

Note: In addition, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education, State Education Law and Vehicle and Traffic Law.
